With the sun still beating down on the area we worked on last Saturday, the crew yesterday began clearing off the upper area, the area at the end of the parking area.
The debris pile from Saturday had been taken away so we started a new pile. The debris that was too far away for it to be picked up was moved over by the road, next to the ebony. We cleared guinea grass, picked up some trash, and cut up a fallen tree.
Our idea is to work along the road to clear a path to the end. This area will be shaded in the afternoon so a great place to work on during evenings.
We were greeted by two residents in the neighborhood. Chuy lives right across the street from where we were working. He stopped by to say hello and thank us for the work we were doing. He later brought a bottle of ice-cold water for everyone.
Towards the end of the work day, Martin Haggstrom stopped by to also say hello and thank us for our hard work. He lives further down the street and, like Chuy, enjoys the natural setting offered by the fish hatchery ponds. His kids loved the area growing up and likes the idea of our chapter partnering with TPWD to restore the trails. He warned us to keep an eye out for snakes and alligators. He also asked if there was anything we could do to warn drivers about the wildlife crossing the road in the area. Too many turtles and opossums are being run over and it has been a long time since they have seen a live armadillo. We’ll have to see how we can help.
After talking to Martin, we were rewarded with a magnificent sunset.
